Ah yes, pirate metal. Or should that be Arrrr yes? No? Ok let's carry on.
Alestorm are one of those bands that you could listen to over and over again. The sound of accordions and fiddles singing their sweet drunken melody suddenly being drowned out by madly distorted guitars and heavy double bass drumming is one of those sweet pleasures which sums up the genre in a whole. Alestorm have been around since about 2005 and have churned out 3 albums so far. Each album takes on certain lyrical themes, which are all revolve around pirates (who would have guessed?), while being mixed in eclectic melodies and rhythms which all kind of meld together in an unmistakable sound.
Let's take a very quick look at their albums shall we?
Captain Morgan's Revenge, Alestorm's very first album in 2008. This album focuses heavily on what makes a pirate a pirate. With lyrical themes of walking the plank and sinking into Davy Jones's locker you cannot mistake the feeling this album gives. Alestorm really cement their unique sound in this album.
Black Sails at Midnight, from 2010, really just expands on what Alestorm already set in stone with the first album. Heavier, heartier, drunker, and much more melodic with a sweet sound and some rough vocals thrown in for good measure.
Back Through Time, 2011, takes on a very sci-fi slant on the whole pirate genre... but is still a lot more drunk and a lot more pirate than the first two albums.
Now, Alestorm are one of those bands from sub genre metal which are pretty well known. Gigging since 2005 tends to do that to the popularity of a band, but I still think that, if you have never heard of this band or this type of metal before, you should probably go listen to them... right now... really go listen, I'll still be here.
